Thursday Light Run
09.30.04 (8:14 am)   [edit]

Went to North Chagrin and ran with J this morning.  We both hadn't run since the weekend so we were rested and kept a pretty good pace.  It was still dark out when we started so we didn't do our usual route.  Instead we did a couple out and backs (avoiding all major hills).  J's legs were a bit tight and I didn't want to push my luck with my calf so we just did a 25 minute run, probably 2 and 3/4 miles or so.

I rubbed my calf down with muscle rub before the run and it felt fine the whole time, a little tight towards the end but nowhere near as bad as it was feeling Sunday.  Progress!!!  Hopefully continued ice will keep it from getting worse and I can go into this weekend healthy!

Time was really against me this morning, it was dragging.  Let's hope the rest of the day isn't like that...

Resting Sucks
09.29.04 (5:41 pm)   [edit]

So I haven't ran or done any kind of aerobic activity since Sunday.  I feel like a slug!!!  I can't wait to run tomorrow morning!  Lets all keep our fingers crossed that the three days off were enough to fix my calf.  It doesn't hurt today and it felt fine yesterday but tomorrow will be the true test I guess.

I need to get in a run tomorrow and Saturday so that my body doesn't go into shock when I up the mileage on Sunday to 15-16 miles.  I will probably try and swim on Friday.

I had a great review on Monday!  My boss and I are on the same plane with my progress and worth at our office which really made me feel good.

Meanwhile I think I have developed allergies or something because I have had this dry itchy throat causing me to cough all day long since Saturday.  I absolutely hate being sick because I refuse to let it take over my life.  I hate to give up vacation days because I am sick.  So I don't :)  I just suffer.  Oh well.

Busy Busy Bee
09.26.04 (7:42 am)   [edit]

This weekend has been super packed (and it still isn't over).  Friday night I worked late and then my husband and I checked out an Art Gallery downtown.  It was very interesting, lots of people, great music, and some amazing paintings!

Got home around 9 and went to the grocery store to get stuff to make Florida Salad to take to all the parties I had this weekend. Prepared that and headed to bed!

Saturday morning I went to a Team in Training informational meeting to try and recruit some triathletes for the spring season!  At least one girl signed up and she said her boyfriend is going to do it too!  We have 7 signed up so far.  Hopefully we get a big group.  A, C, H, and I all want to be mentors for the spring season so we need to get a lot of people signed up.  So I will be doing another Olympic distance tri in April and I can't wait!

After the informational meeting I headed out to West Woods for my running clubs clam bake.  I did a 50 minute trail run with Coach K and M.  They were speedy!  So I dropped off to talk to some family friends and finished the last 20 minutes of the run on my own.  My calf was fine until about 40 minutes when the trail changed to these round rocks, very difficult to run uphill on a rocky path, so that bothered me a little bit.  But I had put some muscle rub on my calf before the run and I think that helped.

After the run we had some great food and conversation!  My husband came for the food and we had a pretty good time.  So far everyone I have met in the club is really great and very accepting of me, even though I am new and by far the youngest member.  Everyone seems very close knit which is really awesome.

After that party we headed down to Akron for a b-day party.  I got to see A (she has been in Italy the past three weeks) for the first time since the triathlon.  Glad she is back so now we can start running and training together!  The party was fun but we had to head out around 11:30 since I had to run this morning at 8.

Woke up this morning at 6:30.  Took my shower and went to turn off the water, it wouldn't turn off!  So I had to leave my apartment with the water running in the tub.  I called the after hours emergency line but noone answered so I just left a message.

Got to Solon just in time.  There were only 3 of us this morning because almost everyone was running the Buckeye half marathon today.  The two guys there were nice enough to run at a reasonable pace so that I could hang and chat with them during the run.  I did twelve miles in just under an hour 40 minutes today.  So I was pushing it a little bit but it was nice to have company.  We even did a mile off the roads on a trail which was nice.  My calf was sore today but not bad enough to stop running.  I am going to ice and rest it until Thursday and see how it feels on my short run.  I think I may have to cop out on Richmond.  I will still probably go but I will either just run a half marathon or do the marathon as a training run with some walk breaks.  One of the club members is going and if I don't go she will have to drive the 10 hours there and 10 hours back by herself.

After the run I went and picked up some food to grill and got my hair cut. Something about getting your hair lobbed off is so invigorating!

Got back to the apartment and the tub isn't running so they must have fixed it (they left a piece of whatever was broken in the tub). I am just glad it is fixed.

Now I have to get ready for a Team in Training picnic :)  Hopefully I will be going to bed early tonight because I have my first annual job review tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed that I do well!

Trail Running
09.23.04 (3:35 am)   [edit]

Went out for a short run this morning with J.  My calf is still sore so we just did 25 minutes.  We tryed out some new trails.  The scenery at North Chagrin is breathtaking sometimes.  We ran down to an overlook of a little valley.  Who knew Ohio had such beautiful sights?

My calf isn't getting better so I need to decide whether to put up with the annoyance or take a week off.  The problem is I still want to run Richmond marathon in November.  In order to do that I really need to start upping the mileage which means a 15 miler this weekend an 18 in two weekends, and a 20 miler after that.  I know plenty of runners who run with pain, and I have done it before with shin splints, bone bruises, and even a stress fracture.  If I knew for sure that a week off would be enough time to heal whatever is wrong I would probably do it, but if it isn't enough time then I don't want to waste that week.  Uggh. Decisions decisions :)  For now I took off yesterday and I will take off tomorrow.  Saturday I have a real easy hour run planned and Sunday should be the 15 miler.  I figure if I don't feel good Sunday then all I will do next week is swim.  Hopefully tommorrow off combined with ice will be enough to fix whatever is going on though.

Track Workout
09.21.04 (4:13 pm)   [edit]

I went to the track tonight after work with the SERC guys.  We had to switch tracks this week because Independence booted us from theirs since we don't have a permit.

My left calf is still bothering me but I managed to do the whole workout.  It didn't get real bad until the last set and the cool down...still not bad enough to stop running though.

We did 4 sets tonight of 800/400.  My splits weren't fantastic tonight but I will live with them.

3:12, 1:35, 3:18, 1:36, 3:23, 1:40, 3:26, 1:36

I just did 3/4 mile warm up tonight because I was running late but I got in a mile in the cool down so total mileage tonight was around 5.5 miles.  Now for some ice and ibuprofen!

Towpath Running
09.19.04 (2:57 am)   [edit]

Just getting around for the Miller Family Golf Outing.  I think I have everything that we need. (Other than my sanity)

Yesterday morning I went and ran with C.  We went out to the Towpath.  C runs a bit slower than me so I just ran at her pace.  We did about 5 miles and ran for just under 53 minutes.  I am trying to help C get faster so we did a fartlek workout with 3 sets of 2 minutes hard 3 minutes easy in the middle of the run.

I did something to my left calf during that half marathon but I thought that it took care of itself because it didn't bother me on Thursday. Well I was wrong.  It started bothering me yesterday towards the end of the run.  Hopefully some ice and ibuprofen will set me straight so I can do a long run next weekend with SERC.  My right hamstring still feels funny since I took a nap yesterday after my run, it isn't sore, but weird, it kinda feels like it did when I finished Sundays race.  I don't think driving three hours helped.  I am falling apart :)  So hopefully some relaxing golf will put me back in order. Ha!  Only if I golf well :)

Leisurely Bike Ride
09.17.04 (5:23 pm)   [edit]

Drove to the west side and rode my bike 3 miles into work with Ana.  After work we went for a 10 mile ride along the lake.  It was a nice ride this evening although this morning it was raining pretty hard and my bike is now filthy!

Other than some strong winds the weather wasn't too horrible for cycling around.  When I was bringing my bike back up to the apartment this evening I hit the inside of my arm opposite my elbow with the handle and it is still sore and already starting to turn blue...Then I hit my knee with the pedals..left two marks...Great!

Other than the injuries I am glad I got back out on the bike again.  Tomorrow I will probably try and run and Sunday is the big golf outing!

I am exhausted from cleaning the whole apartment and have no energy to make this blog any more interesting...uggh!

Back at it again
09.16.04 (3:30 am)   [edit]

I took Monday through Wednesday off so I decided I should go running this morning.  Went out with J and had a great 30 minute run.  My legs were feeling much better yesterday so I figured a 3 mile run wouldn't hurt anything.  The weather is perfect right now, my favorite time of year for running!

I went to a Team in Training mentor orientation meeting last night.  If they choose me I will be training for another triathlon in April!

Ab Workout
09.14.04 (3:48 pm)   [edit]
My legs are still trying to recover from the half marathon but I feel like a bum not doing anything so last night and tonight David and I went for a walk after dinner. Tonight I decided to add an ab workout to that. I finally got my Pilates band in the mail about two months after I got the Pilates DVD's. So I tryed out the ab workout. If you haven't done Winsor pilates these are like super short workout dvd's (about twenty minutes or so). The concept is great and a ton of people swear by it.

The thing that bothers me the most about the DVDs so far (I have only done the beginner 20 minute workout and the ab workout) is that breathing (the timing and when you breathe in and out) is a very important part of it (or at least that is what the instructor leads you to believe). But she hardly ever instructs you on whether you should be breathing in or out. Grrr.

When I do aerobic workouts either with a DVD or at a fitness club I need TONS of instruction. So while I believe I got a decent workout from the DVD I don't believe I am reaping the full benefits because I can't figure out what to do with my breathing...We will see if my abs are sore tomorrow..that is the tell tale sign of whether or not the workout did anything for me. It would be nice to focus on my abs a bit more since the triathlon training really hasn't done that. That and my triceps are the muscles I want to improve upon the most.

I think I am going to stay off my legs tomorrow too but will probably do a 30 minute run on Thursday. Maybe the weather will be nice and I can swim tomorrow.

My First Half Marathon
09.12.04 (12:49 pm)   [edit]

I ran my first half marathon this morning.  I had a pretty good race.  My plan was to try and run 1:40:00 which is 7:38 pace.  I went into the race thinking that if I could do that then I could start training for the Richmond Marathon in November, and try to qualify for Boston (I would have to run a 3:40 marathon).  I think I set myself a bit too lofty of a goal :)

I came very close to my goal time today though.  In fact I was at my goal pace for the first 9 miles.  After that the race got a little mentally tough for me and I had to drop off the pace about 15 seconds a mile.  I also made the decision to walk through the water stops at mile 10, 11, and 12.  I think that actually helped me to keep the pace though rather than slowing me down. So anyways I came in at 1:43:17 which is still pretty impressive for me considering my longest road race is a 10k and I haven't actually ran one of those by themselves (without putting a mile swim and a 25 mile bike in front of it) since 2001.

My pace was 7:52.6 which I am more than happy with.  In retrospect though the race might have been a bit easier if I had gone out with the 1:45:00 pace group and kept it really easy until the last 3 or 4 miles.  Rather than pushing at about 80% the first 9 and struggling to keep it together the last 4 miles. The first 6 miles felt really great so I think I will probably try and get some more 10k's in.  And I am definately going to try and do the Turkey Trot 5k this year.

I think my body is telling me it needs a break so if I do decide to start training for a marathon it will have to be one in January or February. So that I can take some time to fully recover from the triathlon and today's race.  When I got done today I walked over to stand with my hubby and root on some other people.  Standing still was an absolutely horrible idea!  When I went to walk again my quads cramped up really bad and felt awful.  So I think I definately need to stay away from any long runs, track workouts, or hard cycling this week. Yikes!

Race Statistics: 255th overall out of 1201, 52nd out of 580 female runners, 10th out of 48 in my age group

Short Run
09.09.04 (3:27 am)   [edit]

You would think that after doing all these long runs that a 3 mile run would be relatively easy.  And it really isn't horrible, but I think that the first 3 miles of every workout must be the toughest.  After that you just kind of fall into a groove.

I ran with J this morning at N. Chagrin.  We had a good 30 minute run and got in a little over 3 miles.

It was chilly out but that is perfect for running.  Although afterwards when we were stretching I was freezing my butt off.

I think I am taking tomorrow and Saturday off and resting up for Sunday, my quads still haven't fully recovered from the triathlon yet.

Rain or Shine
09.08.04 (2:18 pm)   [edit]

Gotta make this quick because I have a hot date with my hubby!

I went out and got my run in despite the rain.  30:30 at 8:40 pace.  Not too shabby.  I saw 5 other runners out so I am not the only crazy one who runs in the rain.  Although I was the only one out by myself.  Apparently the birds thought I was nuts because a robin dive bombed me. :)

I picked up my race packet for Sunday before my run.  Traffic was horrible but I made it home relatively quickly depsite of that.

Short Track Workout
09.07.04 (4:36 pm)   [edit]
We had a shorter than usual track workout because we got kicked off the track by a soccer game. At that point I probably should have been grateful but I was a bit irritated. Oh well life goes on.

Here is what I did manage to get in.

1 mile warm up
4*400 with 200 m jog/rest in between
800
6*200 with 100 m jog/rest
1.5 mile cool down

We were supposed to do another 2 200's and another 800. I felt like I was going to wretch after the 4th 200 so in retrospect I should be happy that I finished early.

My splits were good tonight but I had a hard time keeping it up.

400's
1:35
1:33
1:30
1:29

800
3:12 (i went out great on this but the last 200 I dragged butt)

200's
0:49
0:46
0:44
0:42
0:49
0:45

I put my feet up after the cool down and I ate some of my Florida salad I made for the weekend. I am still feeling a bit off so I may go find something else to eat. I don't know though my bed is calling.

Selfish?
09.05.04 (12:26 pm)   [edit]

So I did my first long run as a SERC member.  I had a great run and did 12 miles with some hills in 1:44:08.  So I should be prepared for the half marathon next week.

I am new to the crowd so I introduced myself to everyone as having just done the Chicago Tri with TNT and meeting coach K through that.  Coach K introduced me to SERC. etc.

Well the first person I introduced myself to told me that my participation in Team in Training is selfish.  So I thought about this all day and I have to disagree.  I think it is selfish of me to train for events that don't help a good cause.  I can train for a marathon on my own and I probably will do that.  But the only person that helps is me.  Team in Training allows me to put my dedication to endurance sports to use.  Through Team in Training I helped raise $3800 for Leukemia and Lymphoma research.  Had I done the triathlon on my own I wouldn't have been helping anyone but me.

So I want to know what everyone else thinks.  I really feel that I did something good and by training for the triathlon I helped my community.  But perhaps I am dissillusioned?

On a good note my run was great and everyone else was very nice to me and I am looking forward to doing more group runs!!!

What goes up must come down: 5 Mile run
09.04.04 (9:40 am)   [edit]

Went to Euclid Creek today for a change of pace.  I ran on the all purpose trail and decided to go uphill first and downhill back.  One of David's coworkers always does the opposite.  I guess I would rather get the tough stuff out of the way first. I was running about 8:45 pace which was somewhere between easy and hard today.  The weather was a bit muggy and it rained a little but overall it was a nice run.  That last half mile on the way up is short so I added another 2 minutes to the end of the run to make sure I got in 5 miles.

Now I am off to do laundry and make some phone calls because I have only gotten 5 rsvps to my family golf outing which I have to call in numbers for on Tuesday...joy oh joy :)

Morning Run
09.02.04 (5:20 am)   [edit]
Went to North Chagrin this morning and ran with J.  We kept a pretty good pace and ran for half an hour.  It was a beautiful morning for a run.  It was nice to get out on the bridle trails and stretch my hamstrings a bit.  I think I can get used to doing 4 runs a week again.  We will see.

Short and Sweet Chicago Story
09.01.04 (8:05 pm)   [edit]
I came! I saw! I triumphed!

I reached my goal of breaking 3 hours!

Swim time (including the run from the water to transtion)- 28:42
T1-3:17
Bike- 1:32:23 pace 16.1 mph
T2-1:59
Run- 48:00 pace 7:44/mile
Total-2:54:23!

I was 185 out of 1018 women, 26 out of 117 in my age group, and 1340 out of all 3373 participants!

In my age group I was 10th on the swim and 9th on the run!

My swim split was actually faster than one of the pro women's splits!

Today I reached my minimum fundraising goal of $3800!

I am signed up to do my first half marathon on the 12th and will probably try to find some more road races to do this winter. While I don't think I can do another TNT event right away I am definately going to offer to mentor for the society or volunteer. I can't wait to help save some more lives!

This experience has been amazing and I wouldn't do it any different if I had the chance.

Thank you so much to my family, friends, and support team! I couldn't have done it without you!

On that note I am off to bed because I am getting up to run tomorrow morning at 6:30AM :)

Half Marathon and the long version of the Chicago Triathlon Story
09.01.04 (7:54 pm)   [edit]

I have signed up to do my first half marathon on the 12th over at Rocky River Reservation. The course is point-to-point and mostly downhill so it is a good course to do my first half at. The longest road race I have ever done was a 10-k and that was in 2001. And my 10-k time this weekend after swimming and biking was actually 10 minutes faster than my 10-k time at that race in 2001. So I am not off the hook with workouts yet and I swam for 25 minutes this morning. I just got in the pool and did laps; I didn’t do any drills or sets. I just wanted to give my legs a break without sitting on my butt all day.

Here is the detailed version of my Chicago Story. I will add a short blog for those that are too tired to read it in its entirety later.

Saturday morning I woke up at 7:30 and headed down to the lobby with my wetsuit. We walked a little over a mile to a beach just south of the harbor and museums. We put on our wetsuits and did some drills and laps back and forth along the shore to get a feel for the open water and to get used to the temperature. The water was about 72 F that morning and that seemed awfully cold to me. It wasn’t bad once you were in for about two minutes. I swam for about 15 minutes then we all changed back into our street clothes and headed back to the hotel. I went out to breakfast with my family, C, and K. I got some delicious blueberry pancakes and a fruit plate. The fruit plate was so huge we ended up getting a take out box for it. We had to get back to the hotel by 11 to unpack our bikes so we headed back right after eating. On the way over there was a homeless man that looked like he had some burn scars on his face, a little boy walking in front of us went up and gave him high five. It was so sweet. I had my mom give him our leftovers from breakfast. It is too bad we don’t all have eyes like that little boy and just see people for what they are, people. No more and no less no matter what walk of life we are in. I swear we can learn so many lessons from children.

We got back to the hotel and went and got our bikes out of the van. We all met up in the lobby to put our pedals back on and pump up our tires. While pumping my tires I tipped over my bike. Luckily I noticed while I was rolling the bike to the elevator that I had pulled my rear shifting wire out of place and it wasn’t shifting because there was no tension. Coach K fixed it in a jiffy!

My parents and hubby headed over to the field museum and I went out to bike the 10-k run course with A and her man. We just took it leisurely and rode out and back along the run course just to check it out. Afterwards A’s man held out water bottles as we rode by so we could practice catching them while riding since we would have to do that in the race.

I went up to the room and finished the signs I was making for everyone’s hotel doors. I gave those to T to put up when she was going around and then headed over to the museum. We had lunch when I got to the museum and it was delicious, as it should be for the outrageous prices. My husband and I just got two sandwiches and two drinks and it came to $18.00. After eating we went and checked out the Forbidden City exhibit. It was pretty neat. I really liked looking at the tapestry paintings and the clothes. We also checked out the gem room, mineral collection, and dinosaur exhibit. Right now they have the largest T-Rex fossil found so far there. Since I was a geology concentration in college I thought that was all pretty cool.

After that we headed back to the hotel and got ready for the pasta party. At the pasta party we found out how much everyone raised. I can’t remember the total for all 222 Team in Training participants but it was really significant. For our 9 Northern Ohio participants alone we raised over $38,000! We also heard a speech from a mother who had lost her child in the battle against Leukemia. Her daughter was actually one of the first honorees in the Team in Training program for the Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately she lost her battle but her parents have stayed involved and hopefully all the money raised will make it so that no one else has to lose their child. It was a very emotional but also inspirational evening.

After the pasta party coach K went over all of the details we had to know for the race the next morning and sent us on our way. I stopped by C and K’s room to let them use my tape to attach their Gu packets to their bike. Then I went up to my room and got everything ready for the morning. It was only 9:30 so I played cards with my family and watched some of the Olympics before heading to bed around 11.

I woke up at 4:30am to a call from A wanting to know if I had something. For the life of me I can’t remember what now. Everyone had teased me the night before about how I would be out at the transition zone at 3am waiting for the race to start so I had decided not to wake up until 4:45. (Transition opened at 4:30) So I got out of bed and took a quick shower to warm up my muscles. Put on my tri shorts and top, grabbed my bike and backpack, and headed downstairs. We rode our bikes over to transition and luckily Coach K had told us we could get in on the north end because the entrance on the south end was backed up about a half mile. We got right into transition and set up our stuff at our racks. The transition area was about 50 times the size of the transitions zones that I have seen at the local races I have done. My rack was right in the middle of the whole transition zone. Luckily I was right by a tree so I had a good focal point to remember where my bike was. It was so windy that my bike was rocking back and forth on the rack. I had to stick my race number, socks, and top underneath my shoes and helmet so that they would (hopefully) not fly away. I couldn’t find A so I walked the transition zone from the bike in to my area and from the swim in to my area. Then I went and got my body marked. I found A just before they shut transition at 6. There were still people about half a mile away walking their bikes toward the transition zone at 6. I have no idea if they let them in or not.

We walked over and watched the first heat of swimmers start at 6:15. Then we went back to the hotel to go to the bathroom so we weren’t just sitting in the cold. We got back over to the swim start around 7:15 and watched B start his race. He looked really great on the swim. I staked out a bathroom and waited in line. I got back in time to find my family and Coaches K and M. We watched A start her swim. We were cheering her on and she looks up and yells, “There’s a lot of people in here!” I got some last minute tips from Coach K and then went to put on my wetsuit. I had forgotten to bring warm up pants so I was wearing my cotton Victoria’s Secret striped PJ pants before the race. Coach K got me to ask Coach M if she would wear them for good luck. You should have seen her face! I put on body glide and everyone helped me get the shoulders of my wetsuit on nice and snug then I headed over to the start line and got in line with my wave (36). My wave had females from age groups 20-24 and from 15-19. We also had males age group 55-59. I made sure to stay to the right and in front so that I could start by the rope and in the front. There was another Team in Training participant in my heat. She was 16 and had raised over $4000! Absolutely amazing!

About 4 minutes before our start we hopped in the water. I got over to the rope and adjusted my goggles and got ready. When they announced that there were 30 seconds to the start I started my watch. The horn went off and I started swimming. My left goggle leaked the whole swim but surprisingly it didn’t really bother me. What bothered me a little more was all the people! It was absolutely crazy! And according to coach M I had a pretty clear course the whole way. I ran into quite a few people. I would look up and it would appear that I had a clear course then someone would come at me from some crazy direction! It was nuts. I managed to get into a groove and headed south along the rope. As I was swimming I could see my mom following me along the course so I gave a wave and kept going. At about 300 yards the course turns and you head back north. At this point I gave up on swimming next to the rope because people from previous heats were clinging to the rope for dear life! So I moved a little closer to the boats in the harbor and tried to steer clear of all other swimmers. As I got towards the end of the swim I started looking for the stairs and headed left towards them. I looked for a good place to get up (they had volunteers helping you out of the water because it wasn’t on a beach and someone could really hurt themselves on that first stair) and reached for the first free hand I saw. As I came out I glanced at my watch and saw that I had completed the swim in 26 minutes! I was so ecstatic! I could have stopped the race right there and been content. The swim portion of the race was all for coach K because he really helped me become a faster swimmer and I can’t thank him enough (not to mention for the great program he made that helped me to become a competitive triathlete).

I think the worst part of the race was the run from the swim to the transition zone. Not only did it suck because they tacked that time onto your swim, but it was on cement and it was about a 500 yard run. I have tough feet, but I wanted to walk so badly! The only thing that kept me going was the high fives from the kids along the course and the volunteers cheering “Go Team!” I sucked it up and kept running even though it hurt.

Once I got into transition it was much better because it was all grass. I looked for my row and headed to my bike. My hands were still pretty cold when I got to my bike but I managed to get my socks on and then my shoes. I had put these quick lace things on my shoes but the right shoe came untied at the end so I ended up having to tie that one anyways. I threw on my TNT top and snapped on my helmet. My bike fell as I took it off the rack but I recovered it quickly and headed out to the bike course.

I mounted my bike and headed up the on ramp to Lake Shore Drive. As I was getting onto Lake Shore Drive another TNT participant passed me and shouted “Go Team”. At that point I decided I was going to try and cheer on all the TNT participants I saw on the bike course. I figured cheering wasn’t going to slow my legs down anyways and that would help me get through the toughest part of the race. It worked! I had a fabulous bike ride. The course was relatively flat but mile 1-6 and 13-20 were pretty tough because the wind was really bad. Luckily coach K had told me before the race that I shouldn’t push it into the wind and should get into a lower gear and keep a high cadence. While I was out on the course I saw A, C, L, and L2! It was really cool being able to cheer each other on! The course was right on Lake Shore Drive. They had shut down the inside two lanes in both directions. This course is a little odd because you have to ride on the left and pass on the right. I didn’t have to worry about that too often, but I did pass some mountain bikes! I actually passed someone on a road bike too! I was with her the whole bike ride but I really pushed it on the last stretch of 6 miles and lost her after the water bottle exchange. My quads were a little sore coming into the last 6-mile stretch so I ended up taking my second gel before the water bottle exchange. I had planned on taking it right before the run. I decided I needed it early though. (I hadn’t eaten as much as I had planned on eating that morning so I knew I might need some extra fuel)

I came into transition feeling pretty good, found my bike rack, put my bike back on the rack, took off my helmet, put on my race number belt, and my sunglasses (I had forgotten to put them on for the bike ride). As I was running out of transition I dropped the glasses but decided it was worth it to stop and grab them. The end of the bike leg and start of the run course were packed with spectators. I had my name on my shirt so there were lots of people cheering me on as well as cheering “Go Team!” It was really awesome! The first mile of the run was on grass, which was fine by me. I saw my parents and David and waved. Then I got focused and started getting serious. I knew coming off the bike that I would have to have a good run in order to break 3 hours. I focused on keeping my arms down, shoulders back, and head up. At the mile mark I glanced at my watch and I was going around 7 minute miles. I grabbed a Gu from the Gu stop and tore it open…Chocolate. Not what I was expecting but I forced it down anyways. I managed to grab a water and got most of it down, and not on the front of my shirt. I managed to get water or Gatorade at every mile marker except for mile 3. In retrospect I probably should have gotten water at all of the stops because that last Gu did not get absorbed into my system quickly and upset my stomach a little. Not enough to slow me down though, luckily.

Once I hit the three-mile mark I realized that I could run 10-minute miles and still break three hours and I sighed an inward sigh of relief. This race was so awesome because you were never alone on the run. I have no idea how many people I passed but that is exactly what I did the whole 6 miles is pass people. It was really neat. The only woman that passed me was in a wheelchair. She was absolutely amazing just for doing the race so I don’t mind at all! I also didn’t get passed by many men, which made me feel really good. I even passed someone whose shirt read "Evere been smoked by a fatty?" I believe he was in the Clydesdale divison. What is funny is that the past couple road races I ran before training for this I usually did get "smoked by fatties" as well as those people pushing their kids in the buggy's! Not this race though :)

Closing on the finish

The last two miles were a little harder because they were towards the wind but I still managed to keep around 8 minute miles. As I closed in on the finish I saw my parents on the right and blew them a kiss and I saw that my coaches were right across from them on the left. They were all cheering me on but I had no idea how far the finish was so I just kept my pace until I saw the finish line. Once I saw the finish line I kicked it in hard and I admit I did one of those goofy raise your hands in the air triumph poses as I crossed the finish line.

Words cannot describe how amazing it felt to finish that race. I was beaming from ear to ear. They put a medal over my neck and I wandered aimlessly into the crowd of people who had just finished the race. I heard someone say great job Team and turned to see one of the guys that I had seen out on the bike course and on the run. I congratulated him as well and told him I needed a hug. Then I heard my husband yelling and I ran over to him and we hugged and kissed over the fence. I told him how amazing it was and that I wanted to do another one! We talked while we waited for my parents to catch up to him. I gave my mom a big hug and asked her how I looked on the run. We talked some more and then I went to find some fluids and to sign in at the Team in Training Tent. On the way I found C and K and we all caught up on how each of us did. I went over to the TNT tent and checked in and got a banana and some water. Then we headed out to where Coach K and M were to cheer on the rest of the team. Everyone on our team finished the triathlon! They all did such an amazing job! All the fundraising and training had paid off big time!

After everyone had finished A and I went back to transition to get our stuff. It was quite a hike from the finish line to transition but eventually we got there. My parents and David and I went to find something to eat. There was a grill by the Buckingham Fountain so I ordered a Portabella Sandwich. It was so delicious!!! We had a nice lunch then we headed back to the hotel. We took a short nap and then got ready for the TNT party.

Apparently triathletes are not much for dancing because the DJ could only get a few of us out on the floor. We had to go pack our bikes half way through the party but we came back and I got out on the dance floor. I got some other people to do the “Casper Slide” with me. After that it was pretty much just me dancing though. A little later a mother who had done the triathlon this morning got her girls out on the floor with her. They were twins and they must have been about 3 years old. At first she was just dancing with her one daughter. She didn’t have any hair so she had probably just gone through Chemo. I just stood next to my husband and watched this beautiful girl dance in her mother’s arms. She was just smiling and swinging her head back. You could tell her mom was her heroine and it was so touching to watch. I got very teary eyed and had to get myself under control. I attempted to go dance with them but the little girl was shy. She hid behind her mother when I said hello. So I told her mother how beautiful her daughter was and headed back to my corner of the dance floor. I danced the night away in my corner while the mom and her two adorable twins danced in theirs. I even managed to get my hubby to dance a few tunes with me! I hope that this little girl beats this disease! And I hope that the money that I helped to raise makes a difference and that we find a cure and soon! I would do this all over again even though the fundraising was difficult just to see that little girl dancing with her mother again. That is really what this whole thing is about, saving lives.

Dancing at the TNT Party

After the party ended I went out with B, T, and Coach K and M to have a celebratory drink, and some more food! It was a great evening and I went back to the hotel and crashed until 9am the next morning. I am just now getting caught back up with everything. Today I received a check in the mail that put me over my $3800 minimum fundraising goal!!! It really is amazing what you can do when you work hard! Thank you so much to all my donors and supporters! I really could not have done this without your support and help! I managed to reach both my fundraising goal and my time goal in the triathlon! My finish time was 2:54:23! I will probably keep this blog going as a work out log so it won’t get exciting anytime soon but you can always check in to see how my training is going and what my latest endeavor is. For those of you that made it through this entry I am very impressed! Sorry it was so long.
